Part 7 of 7 … My Summer Vacation
16 January 2020. Sara calls and we Facetime with Michael. He is heavily drugged due to pain but can respond to our well wishes and expressions of love. Oh, my heart. I’ve never been a 72-year-old mother of a forty-three-year-old who is watching her husband die, knowing that she will face an entirely new chapter of her life in the coming days.
This is not about me. I can only witness, but I cannot believe it is 2020, the new year. Michael has survived both Thanksgiving and Christmas. He welcomed in 2020 with his family. He courageously chose to “live” each day rather than die by degrees.
On Friday, the 17th, at 8:55 PM, Michael graduated from this life into the next surrounded by his wife, children, and friends. Bon voyage, Michael. I am a better person for having known you. Thank you.

Jan,
Thank you for writing this 7 part story of your view of Michael’s finally months. I really enjoyed reading all 7 parts, your a amazing writer. I will admit part 7 made me cry, it’s still hard to say goodbye to such a great friend. I pray for Sara to find happiness again and that the kids follow in the legacy of their amazing dad!
Take care, Cari
